Blackout Against Power Hike On October 11

It is not known to many Filipinos that the Philippines has one of the highest electric power rates in the world. The electric bill that middle class households in the country pay for every month is higher than what middle class households in the UK and in France pay for. It is important to note that even if the Philippines already has high rates for electric power, there is a looming power price hike yet again.

This is the reason why UP Diliman students who are members of student organizations such as KAISA –Nagkakaisang Iskolar para sa Pamantasan at Sambayanan, the Freedom from Debt Coalition, Youth Against Debt, Sanlakas Youth, MagKaisa CSSP, Start-AIT, PALS-NCPAG, the UP Paralegal Society, and the UP Phi Delta Alpha Sorority will be staging a blackout on October 11, 2011.

The online protest is titled “I BLACKOUT AGAINST POWER HIKE”. If you would like to join the protest, you can change your profile picture on Facebook to the Blackout photo above from 3 in the afternoon to 9pm on the said date.

This simple protest is a start. Filipinos, after all, need to fight for consumer rights and the right to affordable basic services.
