"In common parlance, ‘plagiarism’ is the appropriation and misrepresentation of another person’s work as one’s own. In the field of writing, it is cheating at best, and stealing at worst. It constitutes a taking of someone else’s ideas and expressions, including all the effort and creativity that went into committing such ideas and expressions into writing, and then making it appear that such ideas and expressions were originally created by the taker. It is dishonesty, pure and simple."

Technograph.ph: The SC and UP Dean Leonen: Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right
"Clearly, UP College of Law Dean Marvic Leonen should resign. That’s what he wants Associate Justice Mariano Del Castillo to do after all, and the professor should set an example. Yet bashing Leonen as a hypocrite should never change the fact that our Supreme Court, held up as an organization of high standards and prestige, had no problems letting Mariano Del Castillo get away with plagiarism. Two Wrongs Don’t Make a Right, Your Honors."

Announcement: U.P. Faculty, Student and Staff Regents support the U.P. College of Law Faculty
(Editor's note: the following is a joint statement issued today by Faculty Regent Judy M. Taguiwalo, Ph.D., Staff Regent Clodualdo "Buboy" Cabrera and Student Regent Cori Alessa Co in support of the Academic Freedom enjoyed by the 37 members of the U.P. College of Law Faculty who have uncompromisingly criticized the Supreme Court’s decision to exonerate Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo from charges of plagiarism based on the lack of malice or negligence on his part (in In Re: Del Castillo, A.M. No. 10-7-17-SC, 15 October 2010).
The UP Faculty, Student and Staff Regents condemn attack on academic freedom and express support for the UP College of Law Faculty
By exculpating Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo from the charge of plagiarism, the Supreme Court has shown just how far it is willing to throw all reason to the winds just to protect one of its most favored members. Not stopping at this jaw-dropping decision, it likewise issued a “show cause order” (Oct. 19), amazing in its vindictiveness, to the 37 UP Law faculty members (including the present dean and four former deans) who signed the “Statement of the Faculty of the UP College of Law” (August 9, 2010) accusing Justice Del Castillo of plagiarism. That “show cause order” states that there is “a general consensus that healthy criticism only goes so far” and that the UP Law faculty has apparently transgressed what it considers to be the limit. The Supreme Court is therefore not just reacting to any particular criticism but also claims, over and above this, that it is able to pass judgment on the “healthiness” of any kind of criticism against it. In other words, anything is “unhealthy” which shows it in a bad light.
Nothing reveals how embarrassed the Supreme Court is by its own farcical ruling than its attitude to brook no dissent on the matter. It is a fact that lawyers working in the academe would probably be the most competent and would be in the best position to testify on plagiarism amongst their colleagues in the profession. However, their honest opinion which was aired with the best of intentions, was not only disregarded, they are now being threatened with disbarment for speaking their minds.
It might be “healthy” at this point to remind the honourable justices about Section 5 in the UP Charter on “Academic Freedom” which states that, “the national university has the right and responsibility to exercise academic freedom." This guarantee applies to the UP Law Faculty just as much as any other vital part of the University.
We, the Faculty, Staff and Student Regents of the University of the Philippines therefore condemn this serious attack on academic freedom and express our steadfast support for the UP Law Faculty.

Executive Committee of the University Council of U.P. Diliman denounces all forms of Plagiarism and SC's "show cause" order vs. U.P. Law Faculty, upholds Academic Freedom
Editor's note: The following is a statement of the Executive Committee (EXECOM) of the University Council of U.P. Diliman dated October 27, 2010. The EXECOM is composed of the Deans/Directors of the different Collges and Schools in U.P. Diliman, including the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellors, University registrar, and three (3) members-at-large.
NO TO PLAGIARISM! ASSERTING ACADEMIC FREEDOM
A Statement of the University of the Philippines Diliman Executive Committee*
We, the University of the Philippines Diliman Executive Committee, denounce plagiarism and uphold academic integrity.
As educators, scholars and researchers, our worth is measured by the integrity, excellence and discipline we bring to our work. Plagiarism undermines that integrity and destroys the value of scholarship.
We strongly disagree with the Supreme Court’s decision to exonerate Justice Mariano del Castillo from charges of plagiarism based on the lack of malice or negligence on his part (in In Re: Del Castillo, A.M. No. 10-7-17-SC, 15 October 2010).
The lack of malice or intent does not excuse the act of plagiarism.
The Court has undermined academic freedom by threatening to discipline 37 faculty members of the U.P. College of Law for taking a principled position on a grave academic concern.
We stand by the U.P. College of Law Faculty for speaking out against plagiarism.
We ask the Supreme Court to withdraw the “show cause” order against the 37 faculty members of the U.P. College of Law.
U.P. Diliman Executive Committee, 27 October 2010

Former U.P. Law Dean Pangalangan on the Supreme Court decision regarding plagiarism: "The latest injustice to the comfort women": opinion.inquirer.net
"PROF. HARRY Roque was reading the Supreme Court’s decision in the case that he filed in behalf of the comfort women, and he felt that certain passages looked eerily familiar. He then instructed a young associate in his firm, the Roque Butuyan Law Offices, to check out these passages in the Internet.
Romel Bagares, the associate, was shocked to find entire pages filled with text lifted verbatim—not just from the body of the article but also the footnotes—from three academic articles published abroad, and all these without making it clear to the reader that the text was not original to the ponente, Justice Mariano C. del Castillo."

EYE SPY on the Social Media: Blogger unearths even more plagiarized Manny Pangilinan speeches
(Editor's note: Ms. Katrina Stuart Santiago, a former editor at the Diliman Diary (print edition) has just furnished us with a note on her Facebook account where in at least three (3) other instances, unknown speech writers of Manuel V. Pangilinan have appropriated or borrowed material that was not their own for their principal's use in his past speeches. Ms. Santiago is a former member of the faculty of the Department of English at Ateneo de Manila University.) Below is Ms. Santiago's textual analysis which we have copied below:

I used to tell my students that if i catch them plagiarizing one paper, it would put into question all other papers they had written before it.
Whoever MVP's speechwriters are, they've been giving him plagiarized speeches since 1997.
